This has been a growing debate for years. It is true that most public schools are crowded and therefore teachers aren't able to fully teach their students in a nominal fashion. However, these are still teachers with actual degrees and certification to teach. Many children that are home schooled are being taught by parents with little more than a high school education themselves.
Of course many home school students get their advanced studies (i.e.: chemistry and other sciences) from actual scientists and/or researchers who are home school parents as well, but those are the fortunate ones. The majority of home school students are being thrown into the world completely stunted by what their parents have failed to provide for them.
Another aspect of home schooling is the lack of diversity that people need to grow. Many parents home school because of the fear of the "real" world. They try to create a sort of Utopian environment where paranoid parents raise paranoid kids. The result? Socially inept children that grow up to be socially inept adults. Some of the groups of families that participate in this train of thought are heavily religious, raising their children in a bubble so that they can protect them from the devils and demons lying outside their front doors. Unfortunately, these kids have to eventually go outside - without mommy or daddy holding their hand - into the real world. And because these kids were surrounded by like-minded adults and their socially retarded children while growing up, adulthood starts off with a terrifying introduction to reality.
Public schools have their problems. Yes there are fights and overcrowding in public schools. Yes there are drugs and sometimes guns and knives there too. But as parents we have to provide our kids the tools to allow them to make mistakes that are their own in order to learn from them and advance themselves, albeit sometimes through trial and error. We should teach our children how grow mentally and spiritually with diversity in order to be people that care about others and their environment. Give them the knowledge to know right from wrong, and the mental tools to combat the evils waiting outside the door. Give them the confidence to take on the world with dignity and respect toward others. That is the abbreviated job of a parent. Math, science, English - these are subjects that should be left to be taught by educators.
We all want the best for our children. We all want them to have the best of everything that we never had growing up. That includes their education. But we should leave that aspect to the professionals.
