Should mutiple personality disorder be considered a disorder of the mind protecting itself?

Some doubt that it even exists. People who are leaders in the Mental Health field debate on whether or not people can have multiple personalities. Obviously they have limited experience. I have several friends who have MPD. People ask me, how in the world could you meet so many people who have multiple personalities. Well,I have met these people in my quest to understand people who have been horribly tortured, abused, and hurt from birth. Here are some of the things I have learned:

1. People are not born with MPD.
To develop multiple personalities one must be abused from a very early age.
My friend was abused from when she was a baby. Yes. I am talking less than
a year old. One must be abused during the time that the personality is being
developed.

2. Developing personalities is the way the mind protects itself.
When something is happening to the body that is so hurtful, painful, and
something out of our control, the mind will seek to deal with the pain. It
will develop someone who can take the pain. The more often the abuse
the more often the hurt and pain, the more personalities that get
developed. As the person gets older, the age of the personalities
can get older or stay the age they were when they were created. I
have met both

3. A person with MPD is usually very intelligent. They are using so much
of their mind to survive. They use much more of the brain than the "normal"
person.

So we can see that a person is not born with MPD. The mind creates personalities to survive that which is so horrible that one person cannot deal with it. The personalities protect the birth person from the evil pain that goes on. Tell me now, is this a disorder or an amazing defense mechanism. I am saying it is the people who are doing the abuse who have the disorder not the person fighting for life and creating personalities to deal with the hurt.

All of the personalities may not be very nice, but it is understandable considering what they have been through. As the birth person begins to heal from the abuse, a lot of the personalities will integrate. Some never will integrate because the memories of what happened are still too horrible and painful for the birth person to accept. We as people who have not dealt with such cruelty really cannot comprehend the horror and evil that these incredibly brave people have endured. We should not consider Multiple personalities a disorder, but Survival.
