Poetry: Work

Paper Carrier

Bag on my shoulder, cuttin' to the bone
Trudging thru the snow, dark and alone
Wind and cold stinging on my ears
Noises in the dark filling me with fears
Rubber band breaks, pops me in the nose
Brings tears to my eyes, but that's the way it goes
The lady in "B" complained yesterday
But that's O.K., don't like her anyway
The next three customer's payments are behind
Trial and trauma nagging at my mind
Frustration mounting bit by bit
Had enough, I'm gonna quit
But wait a minute, what do I see
That lady in "B" left something for me
A little plastic bag filled with used rubber bands
Trying in her way to lend me a hand
On Christmas there was $75 in Christmas cards
From folks I know are having it hard
On Easter it was much the same,
a homemade basket, an egg with my name
A phone call came, I forget the date
Just to say thanks, the service was great
Did I say I wanted to quit?
Frustration replaced bit by bit
You get over feeling that way
Folks like this...well, I've decided to stay
