The debate involves power strips and whether or not they save energy..thus lowering your power bill. The short answer to this is a resounding YES...if the power strip is used correctly and with the intent to conserve energy. A power strip is nothing more than a collection of power receptacles clustered together in a convenient modular design. It has an on/off switch that applies or removes power from ALL the receptacles. Very hand gadget.
Many home power using devices are not really "off" when you click them to off. Many of them continue to draw a trickle charge. This charge is enough to keep the clock running, or memory intact. And most of all, it keeps the electronics in a low state of "power up". Regardless of why the device needs a trickle charge, it is there..and it is consuming energy. So connecting the home entertainment system to a power strip for example, and clicking the units switch to off, will certainly disrupt the trickle charge and save you some bucks.
Look around your home and see what might be drawing power. That printer? Has a dc voltage power supply which is always on...touch it..it's warm..it's using power. That tv in the back bedroom..it's an instant on model and is using power. That motion detector light? Using power...power strip it and turn it off during the day.
