Both these resorts are great for beginners and snowboarders offering 60-70% of the terrain for beginners and intermediate. Sierra at Tahoe has more snowboarders than skiers.
Lodging in Lake Tahoe:
If you want to ski more than one resort than look for lodging in either Truckee or Tahoe City. Planning on staying at one spot to ski then consider some of the condo options around the resorts. Here is a good website to help plan your accommodation needs (http://laketahoe.ski.com/).
Ma mmoth Valley
Lake Tahoe is not what you are looking for then look about 3 hours south of Lake Tahoe to Mammoth Valley offering two great resorts June Mountain and Mammoth Mountain. Mammoth is the larger more crowded resort with open terrain that appeals to the expert skier and plenty of beginner trails. June Lake is the smaller counterpart to Mammoth and the same challenging terrain. .
For lodging at either of these resorts it is best to stay around the resort and here is a good website with information on hotels, B&B and other options (http://www.visitmammoth.com/) .
Yosemite
Not usually a travel destination for skiers Yosemite does offer three great resorts, Bear Valley. Dodge Ridge and Summit Sierra. These resorts offer a smaller friendly atmosphere that is a great family experience. The runs at these resorts are mainly beginner and intermediate with a few challenging runs. These resorts are usually less crowded and allow you to enjoy your skiing and work on technique.
