The High Sierra Mountains located in California are well known for its world-class skiing, beautiful mountain views and giant sequoias. Some of best backcountry skiing can be found here offering a snow pack of deep powder in the winter and silky snow in the spring. It has one of the longest ski seasons and appeals to skiers of all levels offering a large variety of terrains.
So if you are planning a family vacation, romantic getaway or skiing challenge with friends then the High Sierra's are the mountains you want to ski.
"Let's ski Northern California," this immediately brings to mind skiing Lake Tahoe. The North Shore has several resorts all with scenic views of the lake, mountains and desert valley. Because of the diversity of resorts on this side of the lake you are sure to find one that appeals to all the skiers in your group. If don't like one resort you can always try another the next day as most of the resorts are 20 to 30 minutes from either Tahoe City or Truckee.
North Lake Tahoe:
Squaw Valley USA his is the most popular and famous resort home of the 1960 Winter Olympics. It is a playground of activities for both the skier and non-skiers. Not a skier? Well don't worry because there is plenty to keep you busy with other activities, such as, ice-skating, tubing, a rock climbing wall and a health club. Or take the gondola to the mountain top and enjoy the breathtaking views while sipping that hot chocolate and waiting on your group to enjoy some of the finest dinning! You will be the refreshed and relaxed one in the group!
For the skier/snowboarders in the group Squaw is a world class resort with almost 200 runs and known for the steepest hills and deepest powder. Home to the famous KT-22 you will find some of the most challenging terrain with its tree skiing, deep chutes, unmarked trails, moguls and plenty more to challenge any expert skier. But don't be intimidated there is plenty for intermediate skiers (40% of the hill) and beginners (25% of the hill). Also, for those intimidated by the hills at Squaw there is the Papoose Learning Center at the base of the mountain that offers a great area for beginners and families to relax and enjoy their ski experience.
Squaw Valley USA because of its popularity is more expensive and typically very crowded. So if you are trying to budget your vacation or escape some of the crowds then head over to its secret neighbor Alpine Meadows or down the road 10 or 15 minutes to Northstar.
