Brett Favre is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play football on any level. He can still play and he should still play. People argue he should retire because the Packers can't win the Super Bowl. Who cares if they can win the Super Bowl or not. The Super Bowl is only one game. The regular season gives fans sixteen games to see Favre compete and entertain.
It has been said many times by television commentators that Favre is widely regarded among his fellow NFL players as one of the few people even they would buy a ticket to watch play football. Who cares about wins and losses. Would a fan really be more likely to buy a ticket to a game if Aaron Rodgers was quarterbacking for the Packers?
As long as we brought it up, let's go ahead and consider the wins and losses aspect of things. Does Rodgers have a better arm than Favre? Is Rodgers better at reading NFL defenses than Favre? Can Rodgers lead his teammates better than Favre? Does Rodgers give the Packers a better chance to win than Favre? The answer to all these questions is a resounding no.
In a recent interview, Favre told the media that many of his friends and family were urging him to come back because he was on the verge of breaking a lot of NFL passing records. Favre's response to this was to say he wishes people would like him to come back because of how he plays the game, not because of a bunch of records. I applaud Favre for this attitude.
One of the records Favre is approaching is the dubious distinction of having thrown the most interceptions in NFL history. This is yet another reason many Favre antagonists will cry for his retirement. They call him reckless and careless. He takes too many chances with the football, they will say. If these people are happier watching the Trent Dilfers of the world play football, quarterbacks who simply throw the ball out of bounds or take the sack when their players aren't wide open, then have fun watching a lot of punts. I'll keep my television on the channel with the gunslinging Favre. Each throw he makes could be a touchdown or an interception. That is exciting. That is entertaining. That is Brett Favre.
At this moment, we are two games into the 2007 NFL season. The so-called horrible Green Bay Packers are 2-0 with wins over the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. Favre threw tree touchdown passes against the Giants and, though he didn't score against the tough Eagles defense, he made sports highlight reels with some of his creative, exciting plays in that game. I, for one, am thrilled that Favre is still playing. I hope he plays until his arm falls off.
