Every once in a while an Anime takes the world by storm (and by takes the world by storm I mean it becomes so popular that you can find cosplay (dressing up as characters from anime) items in every major store). One of these shows is Naruto. The first time I watched Naruto it was the American version on cartoon network. And I thought it was terrible. I could barely watch the full episode.
Then I went on vacation to my home country Nigeria and met with my sister who was obsessed with the show (I thought that she was crazy). She told me that she watched it in Japanese with English subtitles. Hmmm... subtitles? I wasn't sure about that. I love to read but do I really want my mind numbing activities (t.v.) to mix with my educational ones (reading)? I decided that it was worth a shot after all my sister usually has really good taste in mind-numbing activities (I cant resist a jab at her every now and then). But back to the point, when I got back to the states I decided to get the series (I found it on Ebay for about $5). It arrived on a Saturday and I buckled down to watch the first few episodes....
Flash forward to Monday morning to about 7.30am, there's me lying on my bed still watching Naruto. I hadn't showered, slept or eaten in two days. Nothing seemed important enough to drag me away from the screen. And the only reason that I stopped was the fact that I had class at eight and I think they would appreciate it if I showed up clean. And you know what, guess what I did when I got back from class, yep you guessed it, watched more Naruto. By Thursday I had watched all 100 and something episodes. And from what I hear I'm not the only one this happened to. Apparently everyone who watches it ends up being sucked in. It is just that good.
Naruto follows the story of a 13 year old ninja in training (Uzumaki, Naruto) with an ancient demon sealed within him. His entire village hates and shuns him (even though only the older generation knows why). Despite the fact that he is below average at the ninja academy, he vows that he will become Hokage (the village leader and most respected ninja) thereby making all the other villagers acknowledge him. Naruto is soon paired up with an angst-ridden dark haired boy, Uchiha Sasuke. Sasuke is a member of the Uchiha clan (a clan renowned for possessing the Sharingan) and has been termed a genius (in this context it means an exceptionally gifted ninja). Sasuke's entire clan has been wiped out by his older brother (another genius)
