It is impossible to speak of technology apart from the creators and the consumers. It is important to note that individuals create and use things in different ways for different purposes.
The question of whether or not technology weakens the mind is clever in that it casts an unnatural doubt upon many of those who have never considered the issue, and clears the way for an attack by others wishing to bring progress to a slow, screeching halt.
When we speak of technology, we speak of man-made items crafted from the earth; we speak of tremendous leaps in communications, knowledge, and goods. The time and effort spent thinking about and creating what the majority of Americans see everyday is incalculable. We can be certain that the individuals who deliver technology are not impoverished.
"Technology" is incapable of impoverishing anything. It is a concept that denotes objects created by humans for a specific purpose. Possessing the attribute of volition, we choose the subjects we wish to learn, and choose the amount of knowledge we wish to acquire in those subjects. We choose the technology we use, and the way we use it. If a particular individual is impoverished, I doubt anyone will stand in public and claim it is because he or she used a calculator in school.
Those who speak out against technology usually have an issue with some of the consequences of bad technology or with the way an unfavorable individual used something created by someone else. There is no way around the fact that we make choices. The responsibility lies with the individual.
Technology is about accomplishing more today than we did yesterday; it is about thinking, producing, and utilizing; it is about living more effectively - and for much longer.
