Oran Mor, meaning the 'great melody of life' or "The Great Song" is a shared belief among many cultures, faiths, and peoples. It is the belief that our world holds the song of the Divine. It plays without ceasing, with rhythm and harmony in perfect balance.
"A Vision Of The Great Song"
"I saw more than I can tell and I understood more than I saw; I was seeing in a sacred manner the shapes of all things in the spirit, and the shape of all shapes as they must live together like one being. And I saw the sacred hoop of my people was one of many hoops that made one circle, wide as daylight and as starlight, and in the center grew one mighty flowering tree to shelter all the children of one mother and one father. And I saw it was holy."
~Black Elk, Oglala Lakota Sioux Holy Man~
Now, before I hear how silly this is, please think of sitting out on a porch in the evenings, finding the harmonies of the birds cheering, sitting by the ocean, the lake, or even a pond, and finding refreshment for the soul. This is not about 'hugging trees' but rather listening to the rustle, and finding a soothing song. Evidence suggests our most distant ancestors knew, too, the healing power of "The Great Song." No one but the Divine owned it and it was always up to us to harmonize with it.
Some cultures use distinct sounds to attempt to channel this song. "Nada Brahma" (in some Hindu traditions) translates to "all the world is sound." It is thought provoking how humming a new tune can make us feel better, even if all our troubles do not fade away. In this day with T.V.s blaring, air conditioners humming, and dishwashers and washing machines droning, there are times I know I must unplug and listen. Attuning our heartbeats to the melodies of our true environment regularly can, indeed, restore our spirit. Many, in this modern age, use tranquil sounds on C.D. They may not know why, they may not have a name for what they need, but the need for "ran Mr," "The Great Song," or "Nada Brahma" seems inborn. I remember only laughter coming from my children when they played on a blanket under the trees when they were young. Perhaps a nap under a shade tree is a good prescription for us all!
