I applaud the efforts of some district's attempts to improve scores for students. I also think a hidden but true reason to have same sex schools is to diminish behavior problems that stem from boys and girls being in the same area when a serious study environment needs to be established. I hope the focus can move to same sex classrooms and move from same sex schools. Teachers have always worked hard to find strategies to help students in classrooms, such as group work, playing classical instrumental music to stimulate concentration and intelligence, or seating charts to move students where they may perform more productively. Nothing works every time, everyday, but still teachers try. It is nice to see administration taking a proactive effort to help the learning environment directly. Kids need structure, especially older ones. Logic says differently, but if you have ever been in a room filled with all boys or all girls, then you know how differently they are: more serious, focused, and "true to their own personality". Kids who are feeling safe, not vulnerable, and smart, not challenged, show that great person inside them. I believe that is the goal of same sex learning environments.
