Why can't I keep a promise I've made to myself? Whenever I promise others that I will do something or not do something, I keep that promise. So why is it I can not keep the promises I make to myself?

I know I have a lot of bad habits and I continuously tell myself, this will be the last time that I do this or that. I promise I will make a change. I tell myself, I will finish that book. I could go on and on about the promises I make myself and the promises that I break.

So why is it I break the promises I make to myself? Because I am not as important as those around me that I make promises to. I should be! But most of us do put others first. My goals and promises are usually always put on hold, for someone else.

If I really stop and think the promises that I break are as equally important to others around me as they are to me. For instance, I promise myself that I am going to quit smoking. Maybe I should just promise to my kids that I am going to quit smoking. I promise that I am going to finish that book. Maybe I should promise that to my husband, because he is my biggest fan.

Or maybe I should care more about myself. Aren't I worth it? Maybe I should look at the promises I make to myself and say you're WORTH IT, don't break MY promise. But until I can put myself first (which will never be, because my family comes first), I'll stop making myself promises and just make the promises about myself to my family.
