is a delight. Dressed up in colonial wear, vendors come from near and far to display and sell their wares. In addition, the event features 18th century entertainment, fun for all ages. The kids (and adults!) will watch in awe as feats such as sword swallowing, fire eating, and flame juggling are performed. There are puppet shows, colonial choirs and the medicine man show. You can meet and chat with Revolution era troops as they existed back in time. Another can't miss is President Washington himself giving a talk and question/answer session.
This is only one example of the many exciting events that take place at Mount Vernon. When planning your visit, check their calendar of events to see what's happening. Since we live in the general vicinity, our family purchases annual passes and make a point to visit multiple times a year, and each time we're enchanted by what we see. After your visit, be sure to stop by the gift shop. Even if you aren't looking to purchase, there are many interesting things to take a peek at.
No matter what the season, there is something new to do during a visit to Mount Vernon. The spring and summer months showcase the blooming gardens, harvest time in the fall and the winter celebrates the holidays in colonial era. One year we visited in December and were excited to learn that for a short window of time in the winter during the holiday season, the Association opens the seldom seen third floor of the mansion, and this was a treat.
A visit to Mount Vernon is a guaranteed pleasure and will surely be an event to remember. The historical tour through the early colonial days as viewed through the life and eyes of George and Martha Washington is an experience you won't want to miss.
