At the start of the current Premier League season, the mood at White Hart Lane was upbeat, to say the least. Some big money acquisitions by boss Martin Jol and encouraging preseason performances had raised the spirits of Tottenham Hotspur's fans.
Talk that the Spurs would upset the formbook and grind out a top four finish was rife. I must admit that I was one of those convinced that Tottenham would finally end years of playing second fiddle to bitter North London rivals Arsenal. After all, the Gunners had lost their inspirational striker, Thierry Henry.
Just six games into the new season and my stand has changed. From what I have seen so far, a top four finish is certainly beyond the Spurs. Four defeats (including a 1-3 reverse at home to Arsenal) have left Tottenham languishing at the wrong end of the table. Martin Jol's job is suddenly in jeopardy, having looked so secure a few weeks ago. The stage was set for Spurs to struggle this season from the moment they went down 1-0 to Sunderland on the opening day.
The players don't seem to be on the same page. It looks like the pressure to deliver is getting to them. Their much acclaimed attack (with Bent, Keane & Berbatov) is yet to hit top gear. Most shocking of all, they are dropping a staggering number of points in their home games. Jol & his charges need to do some soul-searching before they find themselves in even deeper trouble.
A top four finish? No way. Not this season. A top six finish looks a more realistic ambition for the Spurs. But with the way Blackburn, Everton & Newcastle have started the season, Spurs will need to improve considerably on their displays if they are to stand a chance.
