As a fish owner i found that the maintenance of fish all depend on the type of fish and fish tank you are looking to get.
I personal have tropical and brackish watered fish. In my tropical tank it has fish like Oscar, kissing gourami and Plecos. i notices that with the big fish i was getting to the stage were i was doing water changes every 3 to 4 days with having 3 1200Lt's pumps or filters and it was only in a 4ft tank. but because Oscar it a messy eater most his food stayed in the water so with a bit of research i found a filter that would allow me to go from one high maintenance tank to a low maintenance tank they called it a fluval fx5 the most powerful est filter released in Australia. now i only have to clean my tank every mouth. not only is there the cleanliness of the tank there is also many other little things that must be check at least 1 every week More will be better but once a week is fine those things include pH of the water know the pH levels all depend on the type of fish you are looking at getting as all fish come from different parts of the would all the pH levels may be different most fish have a pH level from about 2-5 but some fish need a higher level before buying your fish always check that you are not mixing lots of pH levels cause they wont survive also keep you tank a a set pH levels to avoid stressing your fish. with tropical tanks you will always need a heater now a heater can be set to the temperature that you fish are happy with and left just be such that every one and then you check them to ensure that they turn of when you tanks hits the temp you wont and wont cook your fish.
unlike my other tank which i a brackish water tank only half full 3ft tank has to be cleaned every 2 weekend as is contains mud skippers, archer fish and a flounder fish this tanks has a bit of maintenance needed include the temp and pH and cleaning of the tank this tank needs to be teased for the amount of salt in the water as it is brackish water also for the humidity in the tank and the mud skippers spend most time out of water and come from tropical environment.
so it all depends on the type of fish you wont to get as to how high the maintenance is always look up about a fish or fishers before buying them get all the information to make such that is the right one for you.
