I do not think that it is safe jogging on roads for a number of reasons. Roads are often narrow, and some people just don't give pedestrians and runners enough space. Many of our highways were built forty or fifty years ago; back then, I don't think there was much thought given to the roads being used by anything but automobiles. So the older roads often times have very little in the way of shoulders. Drivers today are distracted more than ever before. Maybe it is because modern cars are so simple to drive, they are making it so that they virtually drive themselves. In some ways this is good ,but it also invites some drivers to fall into a trap where they feel a little too comfortable; they stray away from concentrating on whats happening in front of them on the highway and what is happening on the radio,CD player,GP or whatever. When you are out there jogging on that road, how do you what kind of condition that person coming right at you in the car is in? Are they impaired? Have they been out partying? Are they drunk? Are they high? Have they been working a sixteen hour shift at the plant? Have they had a blowout with the spouse or boss? Are they even legally allowed behind the wheel? Are they talking on the cell phone? Or even scarier,Are they doing text mes singing? What about the condition of the road? If you hit a pothole just right, you can easily blow out a knee or sprain an ankle. I just think that even though it may be a little more boring,it still would be safer and a little more relaxing to run on a track or trail. When you jog, you should be able to concentrate on fitness and relaxation, and not have to worry about dodging traffic. It's bad enough having to do that when you drive. All in all, I think it is a matter of judgement by the runner; but I also think that they should consider the consequences. I also think that you have to look at things from the driver's perspective. A driver has to often times swerve onto the oncoming lane to avoid runners;thus risking the possibility of having a head -on collision with another driver. Consider also things such as fog, blind curves, wet road surfaces and many other things. If you choose to run on roads, you are just leaving yourself vulnerable to some very real dangers; some that could cause serious injuries.
