The top gifts for your favorite gardener

by Pamela Kay

Created on: September 16, 2007

The top gifts for gardeners are the ones chosen with care and thoughtfulness. What gardener would not like to receive that perfect, just for them, thoughtful gift? Here are a few of the gifts I have given and received, in my years of gardening.

Birdbaths and birdhouses

Birdbaths and birdhouses, not only add to the garden, but have a practical use for gardeners as well. Birds eat bugs! Anything you can do to entice them into your garden will benefit you. Both come in many styles and sizes.

Garden Tools

Tools will always be appreciated. Some good choices are gardening mats, axes, hoes, shovels, spades, rakes, watering cans, weed sprayers, yard brooms, clippers, loppers, saws and shears. The right tool always makes the job easier.

A unique gift would be a bucket of sand and oil, for the storage of shovels and clippers. The oil will keep them from rusting. Be sure to tie a sassy bow on it.

Garden Wear

Gardeners love a personalized garden apron, some slip on knee-pads, wide-brimmed hats and mules or boots, which are designed with the gardener in mind.

Garden Art

Whether it is a "Welcome to My Garden" sign or a large unusual rock, if well-placed, tasteful garden art can enhance the garden. Other options might be a stepping-stone you have made and personalized, a gazing ball, an ornate garden gate or ceramic or stone animals. Choose well and delight your special gardener.

Gardening Carts/Wheelbarrows

Wheelbarrows and gardening carts are always useful, as they make gardening chores easier and more time efficient. Perhaps you can find an old one if the recipient is into gently aged things of long ago.

Gardening Gloves and Hand Warmers

Gloves with reinforced fingers and thumbs are perfect gifts for a gardener. A heavy pair for pruning and clean up will also be welcomed.

Hand warmers, for those cool fall and spring mornings, are nice, inexpensive gifts for gardeners to carry in their pockets to warm cold hands. They are easily made with flannel and rice and can be heated in the microwave and reused many times.

Gardening Books-Magazines-Journals-Craft Books

A subscription to one of many gardening magazines, books on gardening or a Gardening Journal are good choices for gifts. The journal is my favorite because it allows you to look back to see when you did this or that in your garden. Four of my favorites are:

The Well Placed Weed by Ryan Gainey-$9.94
Colors For Your Garden by P. Allen Smith-$21.45
Container Gardens both by P. Allen Smith-$23.73
Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials by
