Britney Spears at the MTV Video Music Awards

"I look like a fat cow," was what Britney allegedly said in horror after reviewing her performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. She couldn't have put it any better, because deep inside when we all were watching that performance, the first thought to pop into our heads was, "Whoever told her that she was in shape and ready for the VMA's needs to be fired immediately."

It is possible to feel sorry for Britney and at the same time put her on blast for making a slew of unwise career moves over the last year. We all wonder though why she can't seem to realize that she can't go on being a train wreck on a daily basis and then expect everyone to magically forget about her antics and concentrate on her music. Between her constant partying, a twenty four/seven meltdown watch and a custody battle with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, the last thing she needs to worry about right now is her career. Or what's left of it.

There are many rumors circulating around the Internet as to why Britney's much-anticipated performance turned into such a debacle, but at the end of the day, we can only look at the facts. Fact number one: Britney wore the tiniest little outfit on stage, which, of course, would have been welcomed a few years ago when she had abs of steel. Nowadays, however, it was almost painful to watch her attempts to gyrate her hips and try to look energetic on stage. The lifeless expression in her eyes and the faint, robotic smile on her lips made everyone question, "What is she doing up there? Even she seems to realize that she is not ready for this." Occasional camera shots to A-listers 50 Cent and Diddy confirmed with the viewers that the rap moguls were as confused as we were. In the industry where sex sells above good music, it was not surprising that Britney wanted to make her comeback in a sparkly, barely-there bra and matching boy shorts. However, it is ridiculous how no one from her camp had the guts (and the balls) to tell the performer that she and the world were not ready for her to reveal so much skin.

Fact number two: she lip-synced her way through the entire song. Given that Britney was never known for her ability to gracefully belch her way through any of her own songs, it was not all that surprising that she opted out of serenading the audience on her own. Perhaps, it was a very wise move on her part. However, her mistake was that at times she barely even moved her lips at all. Again, it did not seem like that was even trying. But then again, robots don't try; they just do it.

Thirdly, the weave. Allegedly the all-mighty hair extension guru Ken Paves who was in charge on Brit's hair style was let go just hours before Britney's performance, because Brit Brit did not like what he had done to her hair. But really, could it have been much worse than the stringy, greasy weave she opted for instead? Britney can't seem to get her hair under control on a day-to-day basis, always covering her mop with various hats, but we all thought that she would clean herself up for the VMA's.

All in all, Britney's big comeback failed to ignite any positive interest in viewers. While we all still can't seem to shut up about her performance, I am not sure this is the kind of buzz Brit was hoping to set off. The pop star's personal life seems to be on the forefront of news headlines much more than her professional career, and much like with Lindsay Lohan, her career is now in serious jeopardy. This year seems to be the year of train wrecks, where all these big names seem to be losing themselves in excess partying and lavish lifestyles, realizing far too late that somewhere along the line their fame has shifted to infamy.
