There has always been a connection between Britney Spears and the MTV Video Music Awards. It was at these shows that she gave some of her most memorable (and controversial) performances. It was here that Britney shed her good girl image, her Mousketeer background, and became a woman. The sexy dance sequences. The scantily dress outfits. The snake. The famous smooch with Madonna. So it seemed fitting that Britney should choose this award show to start her comeback. This would be the place where she shocked the world again. And once again, Britney delivered. She gave the entire nation something to talk about. Only problem was, it had nothing to do with what she wore or what animal she had wrapped around her. Who knew the shock would be at how bad she performed.
The performance was stiff and rigid. There was no energy, no excitement. The choice of dress did not befit a woman who had had two children. The lip sync hing was off. The dancing was absolutely horrendous.
In a way, you could see this coming. Britney has not had a hit album in some five years. She had not given a good performance since she locked lips with the Material Girl. Truth was, she was living more on the hype then on her actual talent. Like Bennifer. Like Lindsay Lohan. Like Paris. She was becoming more famous for what she was doing off the stage then on it, what she was saying on some reporter's mic then what she was singing in a recording studio.
Britney's VMA performance was like the the continuation of a train wreck that had been unfolding before our eyes for months. After a year where she filed for divorce, was repeatedly pictured without underwear, and shaved her head, this was the final straw. If Britney can't perform, what really can she do? And why should we continue to pay attention to her?
In fact, the only benefit to this whole episode was the emergence of web star Chris Crucker, whose showed more passion on his YouTube clip then anything Britney showed on stage. When your fans are outperforming you, maybe its time to move on. I can only hope we as a society do as well.
