To say that "ideology is to science as astrology is to astronomy" would be far too kind. Indeed, the distinctions between ideology and science are so profound that they could hardly be mistaken for one another. Put simply, an ideology is but one amongst a variety of systems of beliefs which a group of like-minded members (e.g. a political body) adopts as dogma in the name of affecting social change, whereas hard science is the objective truth that remains after the pain-staking elimination of the untrue through trial by experimentation. Science demands proof whenever possible of its findings, and reluctantly adopts a minimal set of postulates as a foundation upon which the discipline is built. Furthermore, the great theoreticians of science are on an eternal mission to eliminate or reduce the number of postulates in which they must eventually place their faith & accept as the foundation of the discipline. The proponents of an ideology, on the other hand, do not necessarily require proof of the validity of their belief system. Sometimes the tenets of an ideology are accepted by its members without any proof, on the faith in its founders.
