Not only would I send my child off to war, I AM sending my child off to war. My daughter is a 21-year old Army Specialist serving as a Combat Medic about to be deployed to Iraq later this year.

Yes, I am concerned about her well-being. It is dangerous business and I pray often for her safety, the safety of our other soldiers and wisdom for those who give leadership to our soldiers. But it is dangerous to live and one ought not stop attempting great and noble things because of hazard.

I am proud of my daughter. The challenge of service is leading her to accomplish things I honestly didn't know she was capable of. Her development as a person makes her service worth the risk.

I honor her service. She is in the business of caring for people with immediately profound needs. Earlier this year, while waiting to catch a plane in order to travel home, she was there when another traveler had a medical emergency. Her training proved itself and she was able to care for the man until other emergency personnel could reach them. This is a purpose worth the risk.

And I honor the purpose of her service. Our nation has enemies with a murderous passion to destroy us all. She is serving with those who are protecting us. It is service worth the risk.

I am not only willing to send my child off to war. I am proud to do so.
