To say that Barry Bonds deserves respect for breaking the home run record is like saying that Babe Ruth was "pretty good". How can I possibly have respect for Barry Bonds when he has so little respect for the game of baseball. It is easy to forget, especially in recent years, why we play the game in the first place. Nowadays it seems the only thing athletes are concerned with is doing whatever is necessary to beat the next record or make the most money. We forget, even as spectators, that the true purpose for playing the game is not to be the best or the one with the most endorsements deals, but rather the purpose is to simply play for the love of the game. Some of the greatest players in the history of the game like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron, and countless others, over the decades, understood this simple ideology. They played the game because they loved being on that diamond, in front of those fans, doing what they loved to do: playing baseball. Sure, Barry Bonds beat out Hank Aaron to become the home run king. But he did it in a way unbecoming of the true spirit of the game, and that, in my opinion, is why I don't believe Barry Bonds deserves respect for breaking the home run record.
