Fantasy Football has taken the country by storm over the past few years. At least everyone knows someone directly who owns one fantasy football team, some may even own more than a few. The one strength of any playoff caliber team is the running back position. This position has become even more important as half of the teams in the NFL have opted to use a tandem running back attack, which in the end will hurt the production levels of quality backs.
There are some say you need two quality running backs if you even want to compete. They basis this theory on how many times a running back touches the ball compared to how many receptions a receiver may have per game. The key to remember in drafting is to make sure you follow your strategy. Whether it is to draft two running backs at the beginning or select the best player available. Do not get swept up in the draft and select players because everyone else is picking the same position.
Here is a comprehensive list of the top fifteen running backs in the NFL.
1) LaDainian Tomlinson Without question, LT is not only the number one running back in the draft, he should be the number one pick over all. In 2006 he set the NFL record for touchdowns with 31 and even passed for two more scores. Though it is unlikely to repeat his 2006 season, his numbers will keep him at the top of the board in next year's draft.
2) Steven Jackson Last year we saw the emergence of Jackson, putting up the league lead in rushing yards to go along with his 16 touchdowns. The Rams spent the off-season to upgrade their offense, which could only mean better things for this rising star. Expect Jackson to compete with LT for the top spot as # 1 running back in the NFL.
3) Joseph Addai With Dominic Rhodes in Oakland, this will be a break out year for Addai. Even as he shared the load with Rhodes, Addai was able to rush for over 1,000 yards and score 7 touchdowns. Expect Addai to put up comparable numbers to what Edge produced in 2005, 1,800 total yards and 15 touchdowns. This up and comer will help the Colts attempt to repeat as Super Bowl Champs.
4) Frank Gore Frank Gore was the surprise of the NFL in 2006 when he racked up over 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. Do not worry about his preseason injury as he is will be healthy and the 49ers are expected to lean on this running back stud to help propel the improved 49ers into the playoffs. Gore's 2007 season will show he is a legitimate top five running back.
