looking for, cut your list down to three or four names, and start making phone calls. It is very important that you be comfortable with your therapist, and if for any reason you are not comfortable when talking with a therapist, don't make an appointment. The same applies if you find a therapist you are comfortable talking with and make an appointment. If anything about the office, the massage, anything, makes you uncomfortable, say so, and if it can't be corrected, leave. Most therapists will understand, and would rather not have a client who is uncomfortable with them.
Of course, price must also be a factor. The price for a massage varies widely across the country, as well as with the modality offered. Hot Stone and Lomi-Lomi are always more expensive then Swedish Massage; and trademarked modalities also tend to be expensive. Around New York City it is easier to find find prices of over $100/hr then under. A few years ago in the Midwest, it was easy to find a massage for $20/hr. The best way to find a fair price to look at a wide range of therapists and compare. A therapist who offers a large number of modalities may charge more then a therapist who offers only Swedish Massage, and most spas have a higher rate then self-employed therapists, or therapists working in a medical setting.
If you live or are traveling outside the United States, the same basic rules for finding a therapist apply: find someone who has the local or national certification or licensing (Canada and most parts of Europe have required licensing), who has gone to a good school, or is part of a professional organization with educational requirements of it's members; find someone who offers the kind of massage that suits your needs; and make sure you are comfortable with them.
