The use of cell phones while driving has been something that has been hotly debated over for some time now, and there are differing laws in place in various countries regarding this issue as well. Some people argue that answering and talking on your cell phone whilst driving is perfectly safe, and that it should be legal. There are others who say that talking whilst driving is distracting, and that doing so can cause accidents and crashes. While research tends to support the latter, there are still many places that have no laws regarding this issue, and the debate rages on.
Simply put, I believe that cell phones should be banned whilst driving, because they take your concentration away from the road and make your reactions slower in emergency situations as well. There is irrefutable evidence that this is the case and that even though you might be a very good driver it still only takes a second of your attention being drawn elsewhere for you to have a fatal accident. Personally I can say that even when I know my cell is going off and I don't answer it, it is still a distraction and that it takes a lot of effort to ignore it and not look at it.
In many countries they are already illegal to use whilst at the wheel without a hands free set, so that at least both of your hands are still on the wheel, even if your concentration is still affected to some degree. Many places however aren't really enforcing this that strictly, and they have yet to see the number of accidents there fall very much, which is why some people will argue that it isn't working anyway.
Some people will also argue that if you are a good driver the a cell phone doesn't distract you enough to cause you to have a crash, but then again it is bound to be distracting to some degree and that is often all it takes for an accident to occur. As well as this the same rule has to apply to everyone, so even if you yourself are theoretically safe to drive while you are operating a cell phone, a lot of people aren't and they will be putting your life at risk as well as their own even if you aren't.
Just how distracting any particular conversation that you might be having as well is related to the nature of the conversation. If for example your partner calls you to tell you that they will be late home, then this isn't particularly distracting perhaps, but imagine if someone told you while you were driving that a close friend had passed away or that your house was being foreclosed on. I think for
