Well of course they help!
I'm in Australia we have a School Certificate and a Higher School certificate and before those major exams go down, we have Trial exams, these are a lot harder then the actual test and for good reasons.

I have to say most of those tests, even the Trail examination were fun,well for me, later on in life I have referred back to that knowledge I acquired in school and you may think it's useless info but I have referred to a lot of information that I had to study for in an exam, most of the time I was just mindlessly writing down notes in class, but before test time I had to study and reading back through them is a great refresher.

Having to have to remember key elements of English, Maths even Art are handy later on in real life. I also kept all of my test results for my children so that they had a revised copy of a subject. Even with school curriculum's changing the information relayed is always the same and who wants to give your children 2-3 books packed with notes to revise with.

In my opinion Exams are a great way to get your mind re-prepped with knowledge, it's a great asset to have and gains you respect in life. That and the marks you get from those test will get you into what you want to do and good marks will get you the best head start.
