No parent in their right might would respond in the affirmative to this question. We don't send our children off to war, anyway! The government does that. I absolutely abhor the thought of war. I have been politically and religiously opposed to it for over 40 years. I protested during the Vietnam War when I was in high school, and I have opposed every military action since then that resembles war.
As a Christian, I understand the long history of just wars fought by God's warriors, and even the Bible tells graphic, violent tales. Christ came to end the need for war. His war is one of the heart and the mind. Dennis Kucinich is the only presidential candidate who "gets it." True power does not need to be demonstrated by violence and force. True power is proven by the ability to create accord and demonstrate reason and a spirit of true human care and concern for our world and for each other. Peace is the answer, not senseless violence.
My son served in the Marine Corps JROTC program for three years in high school. Many of the students who served in the program with him enlisted in the military upon graduation. One of the young men was killed in Iraq, the other was injured and ultimately lost his leg. Of course we told our son that he could enlist if he was dead set on it, but we expressed our objections-I did so very adamantly.
We did clarify for him the difference between a just war and a war designed to demonstrate power and force our beliefs and ideas upon others; war designed to usurp resources, money, etc., from other countries to build up our own power and wealth.
I think that if war was more personal, there would be an end to the "need" for war.
