Iraqi borders should not be closed, they should be controlled! If all borders were closed, then all land trade and movement of people would suddenly end, denying an important freedom and jeopardizing trade relations. It has been well reported that Iraqi borders have been uncontrolled, enabling weapons, foreign fighters and contraband to enter Iraq without hindrance.
With sectarian violence spinning out of control and such an erratic situation in Iraq, it is incredible that the borders have been uncontrolled for the 4 plus years of American occupation of Iraq. Apparently, America thought that the new Iraqi regime would recognize the importance of controlling its foreign borders and do so. However, the al-Maliki government has been unable to achieve much of note.
Controlling borders would limit the influence of Iran on the Iraqi Shiites and soothe Turkish fears of Kurd revolutionaries. It would also make it more difficult
for foreign radical Muslims to join al-Qaeda in Iraq. Taking control of Iraqi borders could have a substantial impact on American efforts to exert control on the security of Iraq. It could help to staunch the flood of weaponry and terrorist training.
The government of Iraq could benefit by collecting revenue on imports at the borders. It could also gain in credibility if it managed to bring some semblance of control over the borders. There could be a grudging respect created by competancy on the borders. At present, the open borders are symptomatic of the Iraqi government.
Getting reasonable control of major border operations could provide valuable time and breathing space for the new Iraqi government. It could build better relations.
