Of course the US should continue China's privileged trade status. Those who think that China's rise as an economic power hurts the US economy are deluding themselves. The only reason why Americans have it so good these days is because of cheap and efficient goods being produced by China for American consumers. Why do you think you can buy a $4 polo shirt at Target or a DVD player for US$30 at Walmart? It's not because of American labour and manufacturing efficiency.
For those who are concerned about human rights violations- what exactly do they think will happen by removing the privileged trade status? Do they really think that the violations will be reduced? The exact reversal of events would happen. The more impoverished the nation, the more violations will occur. If you think the Chinese government isn't doing anything about it, it is. But its a big country, with 1.3 billion people- its not a problem that's going to get solved overnight, or even over a decade. It will take time but the Chinese government has made many steps, chief of which is to open up the country's economy so that the private sector can actually lift itself up out of its economic quagmire- isn't this the American way?
Removing the privileged trade status will not accomplish anything positive. Those who think it cannot see the forest for the trees.
