Yes John McCain is too old to be president. One needn't argue the pro and cons of any particular candidate to come to this conclusion.

The presidency is a very demanding job. Maybe one of the most demanding jobs in the world. This is obvious in the physical toll it takes on it's occupants. They age at least twice as fast as people normally do.

There is no doubt that late into his presidency, Ronald Reagan was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Reports abounded of his falling asleep at important meetings and summits. And although Alzheimer's is not limited only to the elderly, it mainly takes its toll on that age group.

Not including any diseases, it cannot be argued that the human mind and body does not lose it's sharpness as it enters it's final decades of life. One can always argue the exception, like everyone may know someone well into their 90's who is sharp as a tack, but the Commander in Chief of the United States and leader of the free world is not a position to gamble on the exception taking the post.

According to the Constitution, you must be 35 years of age to become president. It is my opinion that for the reasons stated above that the Constitution should be amended to stipulate that you may not exceed 65 years of age upon entering your first term as president. This would still leave the outgoing president at a ripe old age of 73 when he or she left office.
