Skin care: Best products for teens

As far as teenage skin care is concerned, there are two things to keep in mind: the best products are those closest to all-natural and the key to a glowing complexion is consistency in routine.

Mild products are ideal as many teens believe that using a LOT is better, not realizing that this often does more harm than good. Harsh acne washes and ointments strip natural oils from the skin, causing further breakouts as the skin now attempts to overcompensate for this loss.

The nightly routine is arguably the most important aspect of the skin care ritual. A mild cleansing lotion (such as Cetaphil) is great to begin with. Gently massage on dry skin, then wipe with tissue, and use lukewarm water to rinse. Be liberal with the rinsing - this is the only aspect of skin care in which more is better. Pat dry. Next drizzle some alcohol-free witch hazel on a cotton ball and swipe over oily areas of face, usually the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin). Then, for normal to dry skin, a drop of moisturizer can be blended on the dry spots (especially in the winter months). Look for one that is fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. Those with oily skin may safely be able to skip this step unless the weather is extremely cold and dry. Finally, either tea tree oil or lavender oil are great to dab on blemishes. Remember - a DROP is plenty.

The morning routine basically involves a generous rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and then an application of oil-fragrance-PABA-free sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher all year round).

So, keep in mind that consistent cleansing along with proper products is the combination to a clear complexion.
