Race should definitely be considered with college admissions because that is an important part of the makeup of that potential student. When educators say that they do not see color or race in students, they are creating a system in which some are dealing with a disadvantage. All factors of a person need to be considered and weighted so that there is a more level field when determining who will be admitted to which college. This is not to say minorities or lower socioeconomic status should be given a free pass, but it needs to be taken into consideration. For example, an inner city black youth that maintains a high GPA and average test scores should be given preference over a middle class white youth. Why? It is a good assumption that the effort to maintain the high GPA exerted by the inner city black youth was a great deal more than the middle class white youth because of the difference in circumstances.
Some people might say that college admissions should solely be based on test scores. However, the college experience is about more than having a 4.0 GPA. A person might do excellently on the tests, but fail when needing to make real world application.
Above all, there need to be programs that will balance the racial inequalities until there is true racial harmony. Considering race allows for educational institutions to see the racial inequality gaps and work to fill them.
