China is a relatively hot button topic these days, and with all the talk about unregulated, low-quality goods being sent to the United States, they should be forced to clean up their act, or face higher tariffs. Our country has been too relaxed in regulating goods imported from China. This latest outcropping of lead paint on toys shows us that China's quality control inspectors are spread too thin to properly oversee all manufacturing plants. The widening trade gap with China dictates that we must act now, or they will inevitably pass us as the world's most productive economy, and we'll be stuck in an economic decline. We need to get tough with China on regulating imports. It does not help to simply hope it doesn't happen again. China must also be open to re-evaluating their soaring currency. They are not making matters easier by trying to challenge the dollar while most of their country is below what we would make out to be the poverty line. These steps must be taken if we wish China to remain a safe option for trade.
