About 15 years ago I was bored with all the earrings I had. Since I wore mostly western style patterned cloths and jeans I decided to try to make myself something different so I went to the hobby store and bought some leather, wooden beads and some pheasant feathers. I sat down and started drawing up different designs, then I got out my materials and hobby glue. I made the first pair to match a western shirt I had. I wore them to work that night and I got so many compliments on them. A friend asked me to make her a pair to match a western style Indian patterned shirt and skirt her husband had just bought her to wear to the stock show. She came back and told me that she was approached by a lot of people asking her where she found earrings to match her outfit, she told them a friend had made them. Well I decided to make a pair to match all my different western and south western outfits. And my friend said if I would make her some more she would pay for all the materials. Well it was a hobby, and I loved making them, but my hobby soon turned into a second job,as one night I was at work and I got a phone call from this man that owned a south western consignment store in Woodland Park, Colorado, he asked me if I would bring a display consisting of different styles and colors up to his store for him to see. I took a display of 20 pair and he was so overwhelmed that I had designed them myself, as they are very unique not like any others he had ever seen. He took them on consignment at 60/40 and we decided to sell them for $10.00 a pair, as I only had about $2-3.00 invested in them. Within a week he called me and asked me to come and pick up a check because he had sold every pair and wanted me to bring more. Soon word got around and soon I had 4 more stores on consignment. Just before Christmas that year I took a display to work with me one night because a couple of people wanted to see them, I made over $100.00 that night and sold all I took with me. One man who ran an office said this was perfect he had 6 women working for him and he needed to get a present for each one of them but was afraid if he got them each different gifts one might think someone else got a nicer present, so he bought a different color and style for each woman. And that solved his problem. I still make the earrings in consignment stores whenever the store is getting down to about 5 pair they call me and I start making more. So my hobby turned into a very profitable one for me.
