Although most plants (whether outdoor plants or houseplants,) require sunlight or simulated sunlight on a daily basis, there are some houseplants that do very well with little or no direct light, and for people who wish to have plants for their homes and offices but lack adequate light for many plants, these shade loving plants are the perfect solution.
Here are some plant suggestions and some tips on how to care for them.
Dieffenbachia commonly called "Dumb Cane," is a tropical plant that will do very well with limited light. I've read that they typically grow to no more than five feet, but I have one that is over 6 feet tall and still growing. The main trunk of Dieffenbachia is an inch or two in diameter. When the plant grows tall, the trunk can bend, and it will require very sturdy supports. It is not demanding of a lot of water and will survive very well with no fertilizer.
Philodendron and Pathos
are similar in that both are vines. Philodendron is recognized by its dark green leaves that are heart shaped. Pathos is recognized by larger leaves that are variegated. Pathos is sometimes called "Devil's Ivy." Both pathos and philodendron like to be crowded in a pot, but not root bound. They don't require a lot of water but they do like to dry out before being watered again.
Spider Plants are adaptable to almost any type of light. They like to be pot bound, and don't have to be re-potted as often as other plants. Water spider plants when the topsoil is completely dry. The best way to water spider plants is to put them in a sink, dish pan, bathtub or anywhere where you can water them thoroughly. A hand held shower or kitchen sink hose are ideal. Water the pot completely, soaking the soil until the water runs out of the bottom. The off shoots of spider plants can be planted as new plants. Root them by placing them in a clear glass filled with water. Place the glass in a bright spot. If you don't have direct sun, just make sure you have it in a location where it will get adequate light.
Aglaonema is commonly known as Chinese Evergreen. This plant is ideal for situations with minimal light. The markings on the leaves vary from plant to plant. The Chinese Evergreen is probably one of the easiest and least demanding plants that anyone can grow. Allow the soil to dry out completely before you water it. Don't over water it as that will kill it, and if you under water it, it will slump over and look lifeless. It will perk up easily once you water it.
