Trade is important in maintaining good relations with another nation. America has traded with China since the Revolutionary war. And ironically, America & China were never directly at war with each other. We can say China helped the North Koreans & North Vietnamese during those wars, however, neither the U.S.A. nor China has ever declared war on each other. In fact, Americans and Chinese seem to share a common likeness with each other. Americans consume vast amounts of Chinese food, beer, cookware and now it seems, every kind of hardware and tool items there are. We also are consuming vast amounts of toys and electronics made in China. The main reason for our current love for China has to do with the low cost of wages in China, low tariffs and low taxes in producing in China. It's a free ride for manufacturers to allow Chinese labor to build their products and sell them to Americans just below margin prices and just enough to reap huge profits, while avoiding high labor and production expenses. It's win win for Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, Toys-r-Us and many more. The Chinese are our new slaves and their government wants it that way and so does ours. However, with this new frenzy of selling things made in China, comes another price, health risks. Americans will never stand for products that will kill us, however, we consume billions of cancer causing cigarettes made right here. I think we need to keep trading with China, however there needs to be better inspections of their products and more enforcement of laws. I would also suggest banning certain imports such as; tooth paste, mouthwash, soaps, plants and canned foods. We must also be testing items for lead paint and other toxins which are not legal here in the U.S., but may be legal in China. I would also like to see more American products reaching China's shores. A level playing field is only fair and being a fair trade partner is also important for friendly relations. So my answer is Yes to privileged trade status, but with caution and law enforcement.
