Most people assume that traveling on an airplane is naturally a hassle, but it can be quite comfortable. Long distance flyers pick up hints and tips on how to travel comfortably in economy, and you can learn from their experiences.
1. Never underestimate the powers of a good mp3 player or digital media player. It can help keep you distracted from other passengers or problems on the plane.
2. Carry a neck pillow with you because they sometimes aren't provided by the airline. It relieves tension on the head, shoulders, and neck which makes you feel more comfortable.
3. Use a pillow between your back and the plane seat, to ease tension.
4. Stretch during the flight. It might sound like an unusual way to keep comfortable, but it will help relieve stress and keep the body from tensing up.
5. Try walking up and down the aisle of the plane. Sitting in one spot for too long can make you feel even worse.
6. Add a bottle of lotion into your carry on bag and periodically apply it to your face and hands. Lotion keeps the skin from drying out and feeling tight.
7. Make sure to pick up chewing gum to help soothe the nerves and pop your ears. Or if you prefer, grab a container of hard candy.
8. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You should put your own comfort first, and not worry what other people think of your appearance. Think of athletic pants, loose tee shirts, and tennis shoes.
9. Avoid alcoholic beverages on board, as they can make you feel bloated.
10. Drink as many non-alcoholic liquids as possible to keep the body hydrated and refreshed, but avoid anything with caffeine. Most airlines allow you to request two drinks at a time, so consider ordering one for now and one for later.
11. If you have long hair, wear it down. A ponytail or hair clip can irritate the scalp after only a few short hours of pressing against the head.
12. Consider packing a cosmetics or shaving bag to carry on board the plane. Add in toothpaste, a small travel sized toothbrush, deodorant, lotion, and anything else you might need. It's the perfect way to feel refreshed during a flight, and to clean up before leaving the plane.
13. Think about wearing a few layers of clothes; a tee-shirt covered by a lightweight jacket, or a tank top with a tee shirt over it. Everyone's body temperatures are different; one person might find the plane too hot, while another is too cold. By wearing several layers of clothing, you can decide what is best for your body.
14. Avoid salty foods which dehydrate the body, and look for snacks like raisins that add or retain moisture.
15. Use an eye mask or ear plugs to reduce on distractions and keep focused.
And the most important tip, do what makes you most comfortable. These tips won't work for everyone, so focus on making decisions that make you more comfortable during air travel.
