Tips for buying a camcorder

Buying a camcorder can seem complicated, but it can be fairly simple as long as you are prepared. The process of buying a camcorder falls into 3 categories; before you buy, shopping around, and making the purchase.

Before You Buy.
Purchasing a camcorder is not a cheap scenario, and the last thing you want is to spend money on something that you can't, or won't use. This is where research comes into play. If you see someone with a camcorder you like, ask them a few questions about it. Check with people you know and trust about their thoughts and opinions.

The next step involves doing some more research on your own. Make a list of the features you want in a camera and decide what it will be used for.

Will you be filming the kids playing sports?
Holidays?
Vacations?
Interested in making movies suitable for contests?

Knowing exactly what you want before you buy, or even start looking can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Other factors you should consider are the types of features you want on a camcorder.

Does it need to be capable of taking still images?
Do you want something more portable?
What kind of zoom features do you need?

Once you have a list in mind, start looking online for cameras that have those features. Make note of what cameras best meet your requirements and visit an entertainment or camera store. You might have to visit a few stores to find all the camcorders on your list, but it will give you a chance to talk to experts who can give you their honest opinion on your choices. It can also help decrease your list too; seeing the display models and their features (view finder, zoom, etc.) might move some off the list completely.

Shopping Around.
By now you've seen the options online and in person, and should have read some reviews of the camcorder, so you should be ready to make your purchase. Before you buy anything, look at prices in your market; check out Sunday ad circulars, and ask friends and family where they bought theirs. Compare those prices to prices online, but make sure to look for reputable buyers. Skip ebay and other online auction sites, and look at sites that have physical locations. www.dell.com, www.bestbuy.com, and www.circuitcity.com are a few places to get you started. There are some great deals to be found on online auction sites, but no guarantees so only order your accessories there. Another option is to check out discount electronics stores in your area, especially if you are looking for a beginner's camera.

Making The Purchase.
You've decided on a camcorder, found the best deal, and are finally ready to make your purchase. Before you hand over the credit card, check on the store's return and warranty policies. If a store is unwilling to offer an exchange or refund for faulty merchandise, look elsewhere. Also consider an extended warranty on the off chance that something does happen.

Good luck on your search.
