Yoga, to me, is the only form of exercise that works the body and the mind. The many benefits of yoga include balance, strength, and flexibility. Balance is an important part of yoga. To achieve the balancing poses of yoga , you must have the ability to concentrate. Concentration is improved and this leads to improved use of the mind. The ability to concentrate spreads to all areas of your life and helps you to accomplish tasks more efficiently. As you begin to do yoga, the strength of your body improves. Yoga develops all the muscle groups of the body. Unlike weightlifting, which builds bulky muscles, yoga builds long, lean muscles .There are asanas that develop each muscle group in the body. Flexibility, another key component of yoga, is often forgotten in other forms of exercise. Flexibility, which is lost as we age, can be regained, and even increased with yoga. Flexibility helps to prevent sports injuries and helps to reduce the aches and pains of aging. Yoga massages and stimulates the internal organ. This can help to keep the internal organs stimulated and working efficiently. Yoga not only exercises the body, but the mind also. The flowing sequences of yoga along with the compression and decompression of the asanas have a great benefit to the body. The most important of these benefits is the relief of stress, which is known to be the cause of much illness. Yoga combines breath and movement. The awareness of breathing instantly slows the respirations and this calms the mind. The calmness learned in yoga spills out into other areas of your life. Yoga has been used to treat anxiety with great success. Yoga is a wonderful way to relax and forget about your troubles for a while.
