Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to do nothing.
I'll put a different slant on this, and talk about doing nothing, by not retaliating to senseless acts of vandalism done to us, and to others. Sometimes we can't retaliate simply because the perpetrator is long gone. But I'm counting retaliation to include our silent fuming, and being upset, and which is certainly not a state of nothing happening inside of us.
Recently my letterbox was partially destroyed by vandals. The brass inserts were ripped out entirely from the brickwork. I was wondering if there was any spiritual reason, or lesson for me behind that.
Life is of course all a lesson for those of us that want to learn from it. The letter box incident allowed me to contact Peter the handyman again, and renew our acquaintance, and made me realise that destruction is the goal of most people, because they are not creative. And creativity comes from love, they have little feel for love, and really it is only love that can heal their attitudes.
Love still exists in some people, so why not in me. I need to cultivate love, mixed with understanding. I need to realise that life is full of incidents. I need to let the incident, no matter how bad it seems to be, to show me an aspect of love. In this case, the lesson of love, or the aspect of love to see, is that love moves forward, and always repairs the destruction of hate. Repair destruction, and keep spreading love everywhere you go. So in the end I did nothing to retaliate against these vandals, but I certainly didn't do, "nothing" nothing. I arranged for the repair of my letterbox, and learnt a lesson in love, and self awareness.
Doing nothing is very seldom entirely possible in all directions, because in some direction, we are always still doing something. Just holding all, and waiting for now, patiently doing nothing, is not really doing nothing, we are learning a lesson in timing, and patience, and never to rush into things. We should allow the natural flow to carry us to our rightful position in life.
This does not mean doing nothing. No, it means to not upset yourself by trying to get out of the flow, by resisting it, and trying to do what you think you should be doing. No, just relax, and if the flow dumps you on a rock for a while, sunbake a bit until the flow increases, and moves you on, once more again. You can, and must sunbake now, as your flow wants you to work on yourself, and stop on the rock of life for a while, and then move
