Hundreds of years ago, only the rich and royal had any say in government. Even more recently, women did not get full rights, or a say in how their country was run. Now, gay, lesbian, and transsexual individuals are the ones fighting for their rights.
Much like the common men, and women, homosexual individuals have a lot of challenges to overcome. Public opinion has begun to change, but has yet to swing entirely to their favor. There are many prejudices inhibiting them from many things, including the right to marriage, and the benefits of being married.
Because marriage licenses are given so freely to heterosexuals, we must assume that marriage and the benefits involved are generally considered to be a 'right', not something that must be earned. Working from this conclusion, it is clear that everyone should be allowed to marry, unless there is a reason for them to be denied this privilege. However, all the reasons presented for why gays should not be allowed to marry are foolish, inaccurate, or bigoted. Many are even based on religion, which thanks to laws separating church and state, render those arguments invalid.
The most common arguments against homosexual marriage are as follows:
1. They do/can not have kids, and so don't need the benefits
2. They are sinners and do not deserve the benefits
3. It will lead to all sorts of unacceptable marriages
4. It will lead to marriages between heterosexuals of the same gender just to get those benefits from the government
1. Although it is a known fact that two people of the same gender can not produce children together, gay couples can still raise children. A lesbian couple can get someone to donate sperm, whereas a gay couple can have someone carry the child for them. Either sort of couple can also adopt children.
Sterile heterosexual couples who choose to adopt, or heterosexual couples who choose not to have children, are not denied any of the benefits of marriage. Thus homosexual couples, regardless of their choice as relates to children, should be afforded the same privileges.
2. The idea that non-heterosexuals are evil, corrupt, or sinners comes not from logic of any sort, but from religion and bigotry. Since religion is generally not accepted as the basis for laws in areas where gay marriage is an issue, such as the US, UK, and Canada, this reason is also invalid. Personal biases aside, there is no reason to prohibit gays from marrying. There is no evidence that the gay&lesbian community commit more crimes than the heterosexuals,
