I decided that the best source for this piece would actually be ten upcoming high school graduates. The first question I asked was what gifts they hoped they WOULD NOT receive. Here's their responses, beginning with least desirable choice:
(1) Graduation Books-You know the ones. The ones all the gift stores sell at graduation time telling them what a great future they have ahead of them.
(2) Teddy Bears and Barbie Dolls dressed as graduates. Just as undesirable as the book above.
(3) Novelty items touting their graduation year. You only need so many frames and/or necklaces announcing your graduation year.
(3) Manicure Sets. Even the solid gold ones are lame gifts in their opinion. They much prefer pedicure gift cards.
(4) Organizers/Planners/Briefcases . Remember that they're going to college, not into the executive world. Just because they're a high school grad, doesn't mean they're a geek carrying around a Franklin.
(5) Pen/Pencil Sets. Okay for execs and geeks, but not for a recent high school grad. Cheesy, unoriginal gift idea!
And now for the list you've all been waiting for! The guy interviewees unanimously agreed on these top two gifts:
(1) Money, money, money! No one can have too much.
(2) Gift cards, preferably from the major card companies that can be used anywhere.
Girls also had these items as very desirable on their lists, with three other additions:
(1) Cool gift baskets filled with body fragrances, scented candles and gift coupons for massages, hair stylists and coffee shops.
(2) Fresh flowers for graduation day or pretty potted plants for their dorm room
(3) Pretty towels and/or sheet sets-also for the dorm room.
As always is the case: Girls are much easier to shop for than the guys. Some things never change, even when shopping for high school graduation gifts!
