Redneck Bull Running
There just isn't anything more delicious than BBQ'd corn on the cob and when you can feel the urge coming on in the cool of a summer evening you know you just have to find a way to satisfy the taste. Sometimes you just have to go to the trouble to getting the corn off the stalk no matter what and growing up in a farming community you just get used to the fact that some of your crop is going to be lost. Sometimes it due to weather conditions, over planting, pest, but worst of all is the dreaded teenage pilfering! However you feel about the dangers out there you just have to remember not all farmers carry shot guns and drive big trucks. Some like to do it the easy way. That is easy for them and not so easy for the kids trying to make off with some of his corn crop!
It was a warm summer evening and the stars were just starting to come out. We were all a little restless and trying to think of something challenging to burn off the nervous energy. The moon was going to be full that night so there was plenty of light. We talked about a swim at the lake or a little back yard music but nothing seem to really catch our attention until my sister said it would be nice to just bbq some corn on the cob.
The problem was no one had any corn except for the one of the farmer a few miles away. We all looked at each other and smiled. "Anyone up for a little corn stealing?"
Well I don't even remember who said that now but no one thought for a minute it would be the challenge it turned out to be. We started walking to the corn field, a couple of miles away. It wasn't far and the night was nice. Our group consisted of myself, my sister, her husband and one of our friends and her boyfriend. We loved the excitement of sneaking through the tall stalks and picking about a dozen ears of corn. No one could see us and we were quiet as mice which also seemed to be stealing a little corn of their own.
But when we heard the sound of a truck coming our direction we figured we were about to get busted so everyone took off in different directions. Well the truck went on by and we began to come out of our hiding spots, except for my sister. She was missing. We called her several times and there was no answer and we began to get a little worried she had been caught.
When we came to a fence at the other end of the corn field we just climbed over thinking maybe she had cut across the field looking for us. As I was about to join the others on the other side we heard a snort in the darkness and a sound you never forget. The pawing of a bull. I yelled run and everyone went in different directions instead of jumping back over the fence! Soon the bull was trying to run in different directions too looking for the best target in his pin. Luckily the others were faster, but there were some real close calls and a few nic's of the horn in the backside for one person. We were real lucky none of us got hurt much.
We took off running for home, the corn forgotten. As we ran into the yard there was my sister sitting on the porch with her arms full of corn asking what took us so long. We never ventured into the night to steal corn again. At least not until we were sure what on was the other side of fences
