Imagine Sherlock Holmes snuffing it one day and getting frozen in ice for many years. He wakes up in our time with the knowledge of the medical world. Fortunately he has not kicked his drug habit, his favourite pipe has been replaced with a cane and has had a serious attitude adjustment. Change his name to House M.D and oh boy have you got a show! When something goes wrong in the outside world, a child may be playing in a park and suddenly he is gushing with blood and convulsing. No one knows what to make of it so they rush him over to a specialist University hospital in Northern America where jacked up House and his knowledge hungry assistants are eager to find out what it really is. Just when we think we know what it is, the kid is sprouting a tree from his ear or can speak another language backwards. All insane, but the writing makes us believe it!
House is a loner, a rebel on his never ending quest to quench his curious medical thirst. His afflicted leg that gives him agony just spurs him on more and manifests an attitude that would make even the most shocking comedian blush. But we love him. We love his dedication to saving lives and loving the ever growing kid inside him. We all want to be him but don't want to be what he will always be, alone. His fascination for detective work has not been lost in 19th century England, it has grown stronger. For instance, he doesn't react like a normal doctor. If you brought a patient suffering from piles in front of him, he wouldn't suggest preparation H, he would tell them what caused the trauma in their brain, that in turn led them to drink, that led them to get piles! "Stay off the drink you stupid 'Alchy'! Give the tax payer's a break!" he would say to him.
Its House's passion for his work and love of himself that makes us realise what we are missing out on.
Make sure every Thursday night from now on has House in your house.
