I want so bad to say yes, but I think it's just too hard to believe. Yes, he will be a solid presence in the NBA for many years. He may lead his team into the playoffs, and maybe even a championship series or two.
History may say otherwise however, a majority of nt big men have won NBA championships. Shaq, Hakeem, Abdul-Jabar, Russell and so on. One marquee name that I must throw out, Patrick Ewing. So why couldn't he win a title, it was due in large part to (you might have heard of him) Micheal Jeffrey Jordan.
So here's my logic; take a look at the rising superstars in our league...Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, D-Wade, Kobe Bryant. Most of the nt (younger) players are athletic forwards/guards. Yeah, I realize that a lot of the recent championships won were in large part because of the big boys in the paint, but I'm seeing a major shift in the way the NBA is moving. Sure, good big men will always be needed, but by the time poor Oden establishes himself as a nt force in the NBA, it will be too late. The drafts 3-5 years ahead of him will be the ones winning the titles, and by the time they leave with their rings, Oden will be too old and Portland will once again reside as an NBA crap shoot.
I guess it's more just a feeling I'm getting; Greg Oden's career has this eerie Patrick Ewing type of feel to it. Hey, who knows, I could be wrong and he could end up ting like Bill Russell or Shaq once did, but it just doesn't seem likely.
