During the time I was a broke college student, I signed up with many different survey sites. You do not have to spend money to join the panel. Many of them will give you points which you redeem for money or prizes. Other sites will give you a small amount of money for each survey you take. My best award ever for a survey was $100 amazon gift certificate. My name was placed in a raffle for taking the survey, it was not a guarantee I would get it.

Honestly though, you cannot make a living doing online surveys. You can make some extra cash though. The best sites I have found are:
