After working in Long Term Care for over fifteen years, I'm of two opinions, they come for both reasons to die or to live. I have seen some stay for a long time and live, some come for a short time and they die. Some of them are there for rehab and they leave well able to handle themselves than when they came. What we have to realize is they are not there because they want to be there, but they are there must of the time because someone put them there. Many of them die there because they do not want to be there in the first place. Many die from broken hearts, abandonment by love ones, loneliness and some from mistreatment. And the sad thing is the owners are more concern about their profits and they forget about the total care of the residents that live there. As a Nursing Supervisor I would always tell the aides that worked under my supervision treat they older people as if they were your mothers and fathers. But then I had to think about it how well did they or would they treat their own parents so I had to change my request to them. I advised them I would not tolerate any mistreatment of the residents on my shift. Most of the time administration would hold on to the slackers and get rid of the caring worker and it is beyond me why that happens.
So to me it is a catch 22 some live some die, who can say rather they help or prepare them for wellness or death. They all eventually die but the blessed one leave the nursing home and they go home to live out the balance of there days on earth at home with their family and friends that love them. Death awaits all of us.
But i truly would love to see older people cared for in a loving manner rather it is in their homes or a nursing home facility, they desire to be treated with dignity and respect, so that the rest of the life they have here would be a pleasant one.
