Guide to traditional Southern appetizers

Hey ya'll come on over heah come Sunday after church. My cousin's comin up from Macon and we gonna throw down. You bet she's just as pretty as she was when she was the Cherry Blossom Queen. I know she'll have those cucumber sandwiches on potato rolls she make. Just a little cream cheese, mayo and Italian seasonings mixed up with a whole lot of love.

That's right Bubba and Lizbeth will be there you know it ain't a party without her slow smoked brisket laid out on hoe cakes with Bubba's famous honey mustard BBQ sauce. I'm hopin' with the way those Gamecocks whupped up on the Dawgs last week that the boys don't get to tumbling. Lizbeth marinates that brisket all night in Guinness then they top it off with that South Carolina BBQ. That's whole grain mustard, honey, and fresh ground green and pink pepper with just a dash of apple cider vinegar. Those hoe cakes are sweet cornbread fried up like a pancake. I'm bout to starve to death just talking.

Yes maam Im sendin' Woody out to trawl for shrimp early in the am. It only takes about ten minutes in that lemon pepper marinade and then skewer and grill em. By the time you got em laid out it's time to take them off.

Aunt Jessie's bringing the deviled eggs just like always. Of course she uses Dukes when she doesn't have time to make her own mayo. She boils those eggs til they've just started to get hard, peels em splits em in half, takes out the yoke, mixes up with Duke's mayo, pickle relish, brown mustard and put it back in the egg halves. Sprinkle a little paprika on top and she's done. What? All that new husband of yours eats is Miracle Whip. No that's all right you make up a batch there can never be to many deviled eggs.

Tommy's bringing the deer sausage. He's been livin' up in Blue Ridge. I know that's just a little to close to Yankee country for me too. He makes it kinda spicy for you. He's makin' those puffs with the bisquick, sausage, cheese and pecans. I'm sure he'll fry some but I bet he's going to bake most of em cause we all fightin' the high blood these days. He's bringin' some of that home brew how many jars do ya'll want?

We'll start roasting the pig long before Church; the boys already got the pit dug. Can't wait to see ya'll. Go Dawgs.

We start summer off right after Easter and it ain't fall till Thanksgiving. We love food and family and we love eating. Our neighborhood on the south side is changing but the hospitality hasn't. Mrs. Sheik may bring onion badji's, Celia brings tamale delights stuffed with fruits and nuts as well as spicy meat, Our Nigerian neighbors always bring this flat bread with fish and by six o'clock we're all doing the Electric Slide. Come on over we'd be glad to have ya.
