Tips for buying a camcorder

Before you start shopping for a camcorder, there are a few things that you need to take into consideration. One of the first things that you should consider is the type of media it records on. The most popular medium is the MiniDV, which are mini cassettes that record approximately one hour of footage with high picture quality. Some of the newer camcorders record onto DVDs, which is convenient when taking it from camcorder directly to your PC or home television.

Buy a name that you trust, someone who has a history of quality, not quantity. You may be able to buy a cheaper knock-off model, but it may lack in longevity. With some less expensive cameras it might seem like you are getting a great deal, but you also have to keep in mind the general wear and tear on the camera. Once you purchase it, the accessories and maintenance parts are virtually non-existent. Make sure that parts, batteries, software, and repairs all come at a reasonable price.

Try it before you buy it. Make sure that it is a comfortable fit, lightweight, easy to use, and convenient. Also, check on the lowlight performance. Some cameras will do fine in perfect outdoor conditions, and then give you grainy images once indoors in dimly lit areas. Be sure that it has full auto. This feature will automatically adjust to color and focus. Leave the manual modes alone until you can reveal their full potential later down the road.

Even if you get a top of the line camera get the additional warranty, you never know what may happen a month from now. Make sure that you get some accessories for your camera, it doesn't have to be every accessory, just the necessities. Get a case and an extra battery, make sure that the camera has all of the proper software, wires, and that they will work with your computer or television. Depending on your application, you may also want to look into tripods, lighting accessories, and microphone jacks, again depending on your personal application. With these simple tips your camcorder buying experience should be a lot less confusing and more educational than you could ever imagine.
