Are we safer now than we were immediately after 9/11, or have we just been lucky?

Wake Up, America! If you believe we are safer now than we were immediately after September 11, 2001, you are deluding yourself. We have just been lucky, for the most part.

We all need to realize that one of the reasons that there has not been another 9/11 type attack since 2001, is that we are mainly keeping the terrorists busy in another country so that they have less time to plan new attacks on the Continental United States.

We should all think about the fact that terrorists do not have unlimited resources. While they are recruiting more people to their side, it takes time, and money to do so. Planning, preparing and carrying out a strike takes even more. I would imagine that Al Queda spent a good portion of their resources in order to pull off the 9/11 attacks. Six years to recoup those expenditures, recruit, train and plan the next attack does not seem unreasonable to me. It may take them as long as ten years.

But, make no mistake about it. We have made no real progress toward making our country safer. Oh sure, some of our citizens are more alert. We've spent money to upgrade airplane doors so they can't be forced open easily. We've spent more money and revamped airport security, causing a pain in the ass for travelers. And our Border Patrols are on the job. But, consider this. Drugs still enter our country illegally over the borders. And if the drug runners can do it, the terrorists can, as well.

So, the real truth is, it's not a question of whether or not another attack will occur, it's a question of when that attack will occur. The fact that it will happen, though, should never be in doubt by any American. Think about it. The Israelis have a much smaller border to defend than we do, and the Palestinians, and others, still manage to commit terrorist acts there. What makes us think we are any safer with miles more of borders to defend and a major portion of our population that crosses those borders illegally on a daily basis?

No, the truth is that while we may be disrupting the plans of terrorist organizations by our actions in other countries, we should remember that the real reason we have not been hit again is pure luck.

Let us all hope it stays that way, though.
